The Town of Riverhead has received a New York State Environmental Fund Grant for $500,000! This money will be in addition to $200,000 given to us from the Suffolk County Legislature and $150,000 from Senator Ken La Valle!
Letters to Governor Cuomo explaining the health and economic benefits of an expanded trail to the people of Riverhead and Suffolk County were written by all of the key politicians. Letters from the cycling clubs "SBRA" and "Climb" were also written to Governor Cuomo in support of an expanded "Vietnam Veterans Recreation Path." The Governor deemed our trail worthy.
This money should help complete almost a 9 mile paved circuit from the Dog Park, past the jets, around the perimeter of the EPCAL property, and back up a refurbished "Line Road." It will also mean the "Stage 3"; the 2.4 mile wooded section will be brought up to a better condition for fatter tired cycles as well. This will make almost 12 miles of protected bicycling and walking! Work may start this winter.
